Why Cospicua?
If Birgu is Malta’s most photogenic city, Cospicua is its most honest. There is less posing here, less postcard polish. Bormla grew up around Dock No. 1, and it still carries that working-harbour character in its bones: iron balconies rusted to a deep orange, shutters faded by decades of salt air, doorsteps worn smooth by generations of the same families.

When to Visit
Cospicua’s light is different from Birgu’s. The streets run narrower and the buildings sit closer together, so shadows arrive earlier and linger longer. Mornings are best for the alleys, when low light rakes across the stonework and picks out every crack and patch of old plaster. By early afternoon, the steps around the Collegiate Church catch full sun, ideal for the strong contrast that defines much of this collection. Early evening brings a softer gold to the balconies and shutters, the hour worth waiting for if you want warmth rather than drama.
Key Photo Locations (and How to Shoot Them)
The Backstreets and Alleys
This is Cospicua at its most unfiltered. Narrow passages, a bicycle leaning against a doorway, laundry lines crossing overhead. Shoot in black and white here; the texture of the stone does more work than colour ever could. Two pieces from these walks now live as wall art: Cospicua Alley and Cospicua Alley Bike, both captured in the quiet stretch between morning errands and the midday heat.
The Collegiate Church Steps
The Collegiate Church of the Immaculate Conception anchors the city, and its steps are one of the few places in Cospicua built for grandeur rather than daily life. Shoot from low and off to one side rather than straight on, letting the stairs lead the eye upward. This is where Cospicua Church Steps and Cospicua Steps were both taken, a few hours apart, in different light.
Shutters, Balconies and Doorways
Slow down here. Cospicua’s balconies have not been restored for tourists, and that is exactly what makes them worth photographing. Look for peeling paint against solid ironwork, a closed shutter beside an open one, a balcony that has clearly been patched more than once. Cospicua Shutters, Cospicua Weathered Balcony and Cospicua Stone Guardians all came from a single slow walk through one street, each frame only a few steps from the last.
Light and Shadow
Cospicua’s tight streets create some of the sharpest contrast on the islands, alleys that go from bright sun to deep shade within a few metres. Bormla Light and Shadow and Cospicua Passage were both built around that contrast rather than around any single landmark, proof that Cospicua’s best images often come from the in-between spaces.
What to Bring
- Lightweight camera body, ideally one you don’t mind carrying for hours
- 35mm or 50mm prime lens for doorways, balconies, and detail work
- Wide angle (16–24mm) for the church steps and any full-street shots
- Neutral colour profile, since much of this collection favours black and white in post
- Comfortable shoes; Cospicua’s streets are steep and uneven in places
- Optional: a small tripod for early morning alley shots where light is low
A Living Subject
Cospicua isn’t preserved behind glass. Boats still come and go from the dockyard. Neighbours still greet each other from balcony to balcony. As you shoot, stay unobtrusive and let the street carry on around you. Some of the moments captured on these walks now live on il-bordura, as prints that carry more than composition.
